I paint miniatures for our table and my for my husband, our DM. This was my first mini that required building to put together on top of painting. The mini is from reapermini.com
This was a custom version of the Balor Demon that we purchased online. The packaging was a bit warped and broken upon arrival but the pieces were intact. This is the back of the packaging. Here are all the pieces lined up for gluing. The legs are done. I used super glue to bond the pieces and make sure they didn’t come loose. Next was the torso. It was slow going but super fun. The arms were attached next. Then came the head. Next was the flame mane on the back. Attached the wings and horns next. Then came the pauldrons on the shoulders of the demon. Other shot of demon minus hands. Hands with weapons included attached last. Side shot of the fully glued demon. The whip is supposed to be all flame. Other side of the demon with sword. After the gluing came the priming. I had to cover the demon in about 3 layers of primer. I used brush on primer because it gives me more control than spray on. Top shot of primed miniature. Back Shot of primed demon. I started off painting the skin. Back shot of red skin. I made sure to cover all the skin parts and work around that for the rest. Back shot of skin with flesh wash added for realistic look. Next I colored in the horns. Another front shot. I began coloring in the wings and hooves. Back shot of the wings. I finished all the red skin needed for the wings. Wing shot pre-flesh wash. I also began coloring the base black too. Back shot of the wings with a shadow and flesh wash to add realism. Front shot with pauldrons painted in bone color. The pauldrons are the skulls of former rivals or victims. The talons on the wings were painted in bone as well. I began to paint the flame crest on the back of the demon and his flame whip. I started with a base of red. This was a lighter red than the one used for the skin to break the colors up. I couldn’t paint starting with yellow because the pieces were solid not clear. Then I dry brushed orange to simulated flames. I finished the flames with a yellow dry brush on top of the red and orange. This is the finished look. I was very happy with the result. Top shot of the flames. Front shot with completed belt in skin tones and pauldrons lined in gold. Back shot w/ leg guards also painted in flesh tones. Top shot of mini. I dry brushed grey on the black parts of the wings. I also dry brushed grey on the black hooves and horns. I added a shadow wash on all the bone parts to add depth. I painted the sword with a green for the runes and silver for the blade. The rest of the armor was painted gold with flesh toned lining. Last part was painting the basing with lava cracks. I started with red cracks and added orange to add more depth to the lava. Then I dry brushed grey and brown on the black rocks for an ashen look. Back shot of the finished miniature. Side shot of finished mini. The flesh tones represent the skins of this demon’s victims. Other side shot of finished demon. I had a lot of fun and and super happy with the results!
