A New World

We just finished our rough and tumble foray into Icewind Dale and it was an awesome ride. I loved the survival intense story and environment. It has given me a whole new appreciation for those who live in frozen regions. Now that it is over however, we want to do something new. Something unique. A world all of our own building. It is no secret that I love epic stories and the first step is to build a wonderful, detailed map!

We began by meticulously taping together giant sheets of gridded paper. The main squares were a square inch and they were filled smaller squares within for other purposes. We did not determine distance yet but began by rolling the dice to see what shape the world would take before we decided distance. We divided the giant blank map into quadrants and rolled D20’s in each to find out what shapes the continents would take and where smaller island masses were too.

We have a few functions of the world already worked on built the rest from there. It doesn’t look like much now but when all those areas are filled in, there will be whole ecosystems in place. We plan on having a good mix of all sorts of environments including: forests, mountains, plains, rivers, cliffs, deserts, plateaus, and islands. We used different dice to determine where they went and finally, where all the villages, towns, and cities were. This included the capitols too.

I don’t want to reveal too much as this is a baby that we are working on and I want its unveiling to be a surprise for everyone, including our own players. So far, we have completed about one half of the basic mapping with plans to complete the other half later this weekend. I am so excited about this project. It is the biggest undertaking we have ever taken on and the story will be completely unique to this world.

My husband and I run a dungeons and dragons table together and I write about our crazy adventures both in and out of the story. My husband DM's and I am the table artist. I paint minis for everyone at the table and provide crafted gifts like dice boxes, bags, and artwork.
